Rat Interrupts Belgium vs Wales World Cup Qualifier as Players Chase It Off the Pitch

Date:

An unusual interruption occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifier between Belgium and Wales at Cardiff City Stadium when a small rat made its way onto the field, prompting players to chase it away.

The match, which ended with Belgium defeating Wales 4-2, might be remembered more for the unexpected rodent cameo than the goals scored. During the 65th minute, Belgium and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois noticed a small animal on the pitch and attempted to grab it. The rat, however, skillfully avoided capture, amusing fans while running across the field.

Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson came to the rescue, guiding the critter off the playing area and under a VAR monitor, drawing laughter from the Cardiff crowd. Despite the humorous incident, stadium officials took note of the situation, with Wayne Nash, Cardiff City’s head of operations, highlighting the serious safety considerations of such intrusions.

On the football front, Wales surprised the home crowd by scoring early in the 8th minute, but Kevin de Bruyne quickly equalized for Belgium from a penalty. Belgium eventually took control, scoring again before halftime and adding a third goal shortly after the rat incident, with de Bruyne converting another penalty. Wales narrowed the gap in the 89th minute, but Belgium sealed the 4-2 victory with a late counter-attack goal from Leandro Trossard.

With this win, Belgium maintains its unbeaten record in World Cup qualifiers and strengthens its bid for next year’s tournament. Wales will face crucial matches against Liechtenstein and North Macedonia during the November international break to keep their qualifying hopes alive.
