Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has raised concerns over the performance dip of India’s leading fast bowlers during Indian Premier League 2026, pointing to mental fatigue caused by packed international and franchise schedules.
Speaking during a match commentary, Shastri highlighted how continuous cricket across formats can affect even the most consistent performers. His remarks come as Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have struggled to maintain their usual high standards this season.
Bumrah, representing the Mumbai Indians, has found it particularly challenging, managing only a handful of wickets across multiple matches — a notable drop compared to his typically dominant performances. Meanwhile, Arshdeep, playing for Punjab Kings, has shown flashes of brilliance but has lacked consistency, especially during crucial death overs.
Shastri emphasized that the intense demands of professional cricket cannot be overlooked. With players participating in international tours, World Cups, and league competitions back-to-back, physical and mental exhaustion becomes inevitable. He noted that recovery is not instantaneous and cannot be treated like a simple reset.
Bumrah’s workload has been closely monitored since his return from injury, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India managing his participation across formats. Despite these efforts, the cumulative pressure appears to be impacting his rhythm and effectiveness on the field.
Similarly, Arshdeep remains an important part of India’s white-ball plans, but the demands of high-pressure matches have affected his consistency. While he continues to contribute, maintaining control throughout a long tournament like the IPL has proven challenging.
Shastri’s observations underline a broader issue in modern cricket — the fine balance between peak performance and player fatigue. While both bowlers remain key figures for India, their current struggles highlight the importance of workload management in sustaining long-term performance.
