Real Madrid advance as Paris Saint-Germain and Atalanta seal Champions League last 16 spots

Date:

The UEFA Champions League playoffs delivered drama intensity and late twists as Real Madrid confirmed their place in the round of 16 alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Atalanta. From emotional rematches to last-gasp penalties the midweek fixtures kept fans on edge across Europe.

At the Santiago Bernabeu Madrid edged past Benfica 2-1 on the night securing a 3-1 aggregate victory. Vinicius Junior sealed progression with an 80th-minute strike finishing calmly before celebrating in front of the corner flag. The Brazilian forward had earlier been the focus of tension following alleged racist abuse during the first leg. Benfica briefly levelled the tie through Rafa Silva but Aurelien Tchouameni responded almost immediately to steady Madrid who now await either Manchester City or Sporting CP in the next round.

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain also progressed but were pushed hard by AS Monaco. Holding a narrow first-leg advantage PSG fell behind before Monaco were reduced to ten men. Goals from Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia turned the match around ensuring PSG advanced despite a late equaliser. They will next face either FC Barcelona or Chelsea FC.

Italian hopes nearly faded as Juventus came close to overturning a heavy first-leg deficit against Galatasaray. Despite winning 3-2 on the night and forcing extra time Juve ultimately fell 7-5 on aggregate after late goals from Victor Osimhen and Barış Yılmaz ended their comeback bid.

That left Atalanta carrying Serie A’s hopes and they delivered in extraordinary fashion against Borussia Dortmund. Deep into stoppage time and following a VAR review Atalanta were awarded a penalty after a dangerous challenge in the box. Lazar Samardzic converted with the final kick sealing a 4-1 win on the night and a 4-3 aggregate triumph sparking wild celebrations in Bergamo. Atalanta will now meet either Arsenal FC or Bayern Munich in the round of 16.

Elsewhere Bodo/Glimt Atletico Madrid Newcastle United and Bayer Leverkusen had already booked their spots earlier in the week. The draw for the next stage is set to take place on Friday with Europe’s elite now one step closer to continental glory.
