Real Madrid stunned by Getafe CF defeat as La Liga title hopes take major hit

Date:

Real Madrid suffered a costly 1-0 loss at home to Getafe CF in La Liga, slipping four points behind leaders FC Barcelona in the title race. The defeat marked Madrid’s second straight league setback, something they had not experienced in Spain’s top division since 2020.

Under the guidance of Alvaro Arbeloa, Los Blancos struggled to convert chances despite enjoying attacking opportunities at the Santiago Bernabeu. The decisive moment came when Uruguayan forward Martin Satriano unleashed a superb volley from the edge of the area after a clever assist from compatriot Mauro Arambarri.

Madrid were without star striker Kylian Mbappe, who remained sidelined with a knee sprain. In his absence, young forward Gonzalo Garcia partnered Vinicius Junior in attack. Vinicius looked lively early on but was denied by an impressive save from Getafe goalkeeper David Soria.

Turkish talent Arda Guler nearly broke the deadlock with a powerful effort that Soria tipped over the bar. A tense moment followed when defender Antonio Rudiger collided with Diego Rico, briefly halting play due to injury concerns.

Despite pushing forward in the second half, Madrid lacked sharpness in the final third. Rudiger came closest to equalising with a header, but Getafe’s disciplined defence held firm. Frustration grew late in stoppage time when Franco Mastantuono was shown a red card for dissent, while Getafe’s Adrian Liso was also sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

The setback leaves Madrid with ground to make up in the championship chase as FC Barcelona continue to build momentum. Meanwhile, Getafe climb to mid-table and celebrate a rare victory at the Bernabeu, their first league win at the iconic stadium since 2008.
