Romario Shepherd Scripts T20 World Cup History With Hat Trick and Five Wicket Haul Against Scotland

Date:

West Indies fast bowler Romario Shepherd delivered a spell for the ages during the team’s T20 World Cup 2026 opening match against Scotland producing a sensational hat trick and a five wicket haul in a single over. His breathtaking performance dismantled Scotland’s lower order and sealed a commanding victory for the West Indies.

Scotland were well placed at 132 for five after 16 overs while chasing a target of 183 before Shepherd turned the game on its head. After conceding a single on his first delivery Shepherd struck immediately removing Matthew Cross and Michael Leask on consecutive balls before dismissing Oliver Davidson to complete a stunning hat trick. He was not done yet as he claimed a fifth wicket later in the over with Jason Holder taking a catch at mid off. Scotland were bowled out for 147 in just 18.5 overs with Shepherd finishing with remarkable figures of five for 20.

With this achievement Shepherd became the first West Indies cricketer to take a hat trick in T20 World Cup history. He also joined elite company alongside Lasith Malinga Tim Southee and Pat Cummins as one of the few bowlers to claim multiple T20I hat tricks. His impact completely shifted momentum at a crucial stage of the match and underlined his growing importance in the West Indies bowling attack.

West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer who was named Player of the Match praised Shepherd’s efforts stating that he felt the bowler deserved the award. Hetmyer himself played a vital role with the bat scoring a rapid 64 off 36 balls including six sixes to help West Indies post 182 for five. Captain Shai Hope also lauded Shepherd’s contribution highlighting how the wickets applied pressure and broke Scotland’s resistance in the middle and death overs.
