Warner Bros. has officially postponed the release of its upcoming live-action hybrid film Animal Friends, pushing the premiere to January 22, 2027. The project has already experienced multiple scheduling changes, having previously been planned for a May 2026 debut and earlier for October 2025.
Directed by Peter Atencio, the film blends live-action storytelling with hybrid elements, promising a unique road trip adventure packed with humor and action. The screenplay is written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, bringing together a creative team known for their work in comedy and entertainment.
The movie features a star-studded cast led by Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa, alongside Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, Addison Rae, Lil Rel Howery, and Ellie Bamber. Backed by major production houses including Legendary, Maximum Effort, and Prime Focus Studios, the film has generated strong anticipation despite its shifting release timeline.
Originally developed under Sony Pictures, the project later transitioned to Warner Bros. in 2024 as part of a broader collaboration with Legendary. Director Peter Atencio is known for films like Keanu and The Machine, as well as his involvement in television projects such as The Afterparty, bringing a mix of comedy and dynamic storytelling to the film.
Ryan Reynolds continues to be a dominant force in Hollywood following the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, which ranked among the top-grossing films globally that year. Meanwhile, Jason Momoa remains a major box office draw, with recent appearances in blockbuster hits and several high-profile projects lined up, including Supergirl, Street Fighter, and Dune: Part Three.
With its ensemble cast and adventurous concept, Animal Friends is expected to deliver an entertaining cinematic experience when it finally arrives in theaters in early 2027.
