Sania Mirza Advises Fans to Let Maaya Rajeshwaran Grow Without Pressure

Date:

Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza has urged fans and media to allow young sensation Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi the freedom to grow in her career without the weight of comparisons. The six-time Grand Slam champion emphasized that while Maaya is incredibly talented, she should be given time and space to develop her game naturally.

Speaking at the Tennis Premier League auction in Mumbai, Mirza reflected on Maaya’s impressive run at the WTA 125 Mumbai Open, where the then 15-year-old wildcard entry stunned the tennis world by advancing to the semi-finals. Her inspiring journey made her the first Indian since Sania herself to reach that stage in a home WTA singles event.

Maaya’s rise began after her selection to train at the prestigious Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, and her steady improvement has earned her the junior world No. 59 ranking. Even Nadal has reportedly taken notice of her development. However, Mirza feels the constant comparisons to her own career could become a burden for the teenager.

“She’s an exceptionally talented player and I watched her matches during her Mumbai Open run,” Mirza said. “But I’ve been in her shoes before. My only message is—don’t put pressure on her. Let her play freely and enjoy the game.”

Sania Mirza, who once ranked world No. 27 in singles and made history by winning the 2005 Hyderabad WTA title, understands the weight of national expectations. “She’s still very young, not even an adult yet. The comparisons are meant to inspire, but they can easily turn into pressure. Maaya doesn’t have to be the next Sania—she can be even better,” Mirza added with confidence.

As Maaya continues her tennis journey, the spotlight will remain bright. Yet, Mirza’s words remind fans and experts that true champions flourish when given time to grow, without the burden of constant comparison.
