Disney’s much-awaited Tangled live-action adaptation is officially back in production, and Hollywood superstar Scarlett Johansson is reportedly being considered for the role of Mother Gothel, according to recent reports. The project, which had been put on hold earlier this year, is now gaining momentum once again.
The film is set to be directed by Michael Gracey, best known for helming the 2017 musical hit The Greatest Showman. While Disney has not yet confirmed the final cast, sources reveal that Johansson is a top choice to portray the cunning and captivating Mother Gothel — Rapunzel’s manipulative guardian who seeks to retain eternal youth.
Production was initially paused in April following the underwhelming box-office response to Disney’s live-action Snow White. However, the remarkable global success of Lilo & Stitch, which grossed over $1.03 billion worldwide, reignited Disney’s confidence in reviving its classic tales through live-action storytelling.
Scarlett Johansson, one of Hollywood’s highest-grossing stars, recently made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which received widespread acclaim, earning a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Fans are eager to see how she brings her signature depth and charisma to the character of Mother Gothel.
The original animated Tangled, released in 2010, grossed approximately $600 million worldwide and remains a fan favourite for its charming storyline, humour, and heartfelt music. It follows the story of Rapunzel, a young princess with magical long hair, who escapes her isolated tower with the help of the charming thief Flynn Rider. The role of Rapunzel was originally voiced by Mandy Moore.
Adding to the excitement, Bridgerton actor Corey Mylchreest has revealed that he auditioned for the role of Flynn Rider in the new adaptation. He shared in an interview that the producers were looking for someone who could sing and joked that he was “born to play Flynn Rider.”
While Disney has yet to make official casting announcements, the news of Johansson’s potential involvement has already sparked buzz among fans and critics alike.
