ZA major controversy has erupted in African football after the Confederation of African Football made the shocking decision to strip Senegal of their Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco. The move has triggered strong reactions from Senegalese authorities, who are now calling for an independent international investigation.
The dispute originates from a dramatic moment during the AFCON final. With the score tied at 0-0 in stoppage time, Morocco were awarded a penalty, leading to protests from Senegal players. Several members of the Senegal team walked off the pitch in disagreement with the referee’s decision, causing a temporary halt in play.
Star forward Sadio Mané later persuaded his teammates to return to the field. Morocco subsequently missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to secure a 1-0 victory in extra time thanks to a decisive goal from Pape Gueye.
However, days after the match, CAF ruled that Senegal had violated competition regulations due to the temporary walk off. Based on this, the governing body controversially reassigned the championship title to Morocco.
The decision has been strongly criticised by Senegal’s government. Official spokesperson Marie Rose Khady Fatou Faye stated that overturning a result achieved on the pitch undermines the credibility of the sport’s governing institutions.
She emphasised that Senegal firmly rejects the ruling and has called for a transparent international probe into potential irregularities within CAF. Authorities also confirmed that legal action will be pursued through appropriate international bodies to challenge the decision and restore the original result.
The Senegal Football Federation has also stepped in, requesting that CAF halt further proceedings until an independent arbitration process is completed.
The incident during the match reportedly lasted around 15 minutes, with players temporarily leaving the field under the guidance of coach Pape Thiaw. The disruption also led to unrest among spectators, with some fans attempting to enter the pitch.
This unprecedented decision has sparked widespread debate across the football world, raising concerns about governance fairness and the integrity of major international tournaments.
