Seth Rogen Hints at Possibility of Pineapple Express Sequel After 15 Years

Date:

Seth Rogen has sparked fresh excitement among fans by revealing that a Pineapple Express sequel could still happen—though it remains uncertain. The original 2008 stoner action-comedy, starring Rogen alongside James Franco, became a cult classic after grossing over $100 million worldwide on a $26 million budget. Despite its massive success and years of fan demand, the much-anticipated follow-up has never materialized.

During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Seth was asked if Pineapple Express 2 might ever hit screens. “Maybe,” he said, adding that a streaming release could be possible. While acknowledging there’s “big demand,” he admitted sequels aren’t typically his focus but didn’t rule it out entirely.

The original film, co-written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from a story with Judd Apatow and directed by David Gordon Green, featured an ensemble cast including Gary Cole, Rosie Perez, and Danny McBride. Although a sequel was briefly in development after the first movie’s success, it was canceled by Sony. Rogen has previously mentioned on The Howard Stern Show that internal politics and budget disagreements played a major role in shutting it down.

Fans were once playfully teased with a fake Pineapple Express 2 trailer in 2013, released as part of an April Fool’s promotion for This Is the End, featuring a spoof low-budget sequel within the apocalypse setting. However, tensions between Rogen and Franco, who confirmed in 2024 that the two are no longer in contact, have further reduced the likelihood of a reunion.

Even producer Judd Apatow, who claims he once had “an amazing idea” for a sequel, admits it’s unlikely given everyone’s busy schedules. Rogen and Goldberg are tied to major projects like The Boys, Franco is focused on his own creative ventures, and Green and McBride are committed to other hit series and films. For now, fans may have to settle for the legendary original—and the memory of that April Fool’s prank.
