Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan has delivered a sharp response to former cricketers Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf following their public criticism of his form and place in the national side during the ongoing T20 World Cup. The remarks came after Pakistan’s defeat to India in Colombo, where the former stars questioned the inclusion of senior players in the playing XI.
Shadab addressed the comments after Pakistan’s commanding win over Namibia, a result that secured the team’s qualification for the Super 8 stage. Asked about the criticism, the vice-captain reminded everyone of Pakistan’s historic victory over India at the 2021 T20 World Cup, a match in which he was part of the playing squad. He pointed out that Pakistan’s only World Cup win against India came during that tournament, something previous generations were unable to achieve.
While acknowledging the stature and contributions of Afridi and Yousuf, Shadab made it clear that opinions from former players do not define his focus or mindset. He stressed that criticism is part of professional cricket and that one poor spell or off day in T20 cricket can quickly become magnified. According to Shadab, his priority remains controlling what he can on the field rather than responding to external noise.
Shadab also backed up his words with a strong all-round performance against Namibia, scoring an unbeaten 35, taking three wickets and contributing in the field. Pakistan went on to win the match by 102 runs after posting a total of 199 for three and bowling Namibia out for 97.
With Pakistan now through to the Super 8s, Shadab emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum. He credited the team’s openers for providing consistent starts and expressed confidence in the side’s approach heading into the next stage of the tournament.
