Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has addressed Shadab Khan’s recent comments about Pakistan’s historic World Cup record against India, reigniting debate around performance and accountability within the national team. The exchange follows criticism from senior former players after Pakistan’s loss to India during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
After Pakistan bounced back with a dominant win over Namibia in Colombo to qualify for the Super 8 stage, Shadab Khan referenced Pakistan’s landmark victory over India at the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai. His remarks were seen as a response to criticism from Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf, who had questioned the continued selection of senior players following the India defeat.
Afridi, however, was quick to respond, stating that while Shadab was correct about the 2021 win, the team failed to manage the pressure and expectations that followed. Speaking on Pakistani television, Afridi highlighted that former players had consistently supported Shadab during difficult phases of his career and expected on-field performances in return rather than verbal exchanges.
The former all-rounder stressed that performances against top-tier opponents matter most, reminding that achievements against stronger teams define a player’s legacy. Afridi urged Shadab to let his cricket do the talking, especially with crucial Super 8 matches coming up against New Zealand England and Sri Lanka.
Afridi further added that criticism from former cricketers would naturally fade if consistent performances followed, reinforcing that accountability and results remain central to representing Pakistan at the highest level. Reports have also suggested that the Pakistan Cricket Board has cautioned players to remain focused on the tournament and avoid unnecessary controversies during the competition.
Pakistan are set to face New Zealand in their opening Super 8 encounter at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, where performances on the field will once again take centre stage.
