Sleep Expert Explains Why You May Feel Tired Despite 8 Hours of Sleep

Date:

Even after getting the recommended 8 hours of sleep, many people wake up feeling groggy and fatigued. Dr. Christopher J Allen, a sleep medicine and pediatric neurology specialist with 20 years of experience, explains that sleep quality matters more than sleep duration. “You don’t need more sleep. You need better sleep,” he emphasizes.

According to Dr. Allen, poor sleep quality can result from undiagnosed sleep disorders or disrupted sleep patterns. Even when clocking the ideal 7 to 9 hours, waking up with headaches, dry mouth, or persistent fatigue signals that your rest is not restorative.

To improve sleep quality, Dr. Allen suggests two key steps: observe sleep behaviour and seek professional evaluation. Monitoring signs such as snoring or pauses in breathing can indicate conditions like sleep apnea, which interfere with restorative sleep. Consulting a qualified sleep specialist can help diagnose issues and ensure that you wake up refreshed and alert.

Incorporating healthy sleep habits, consistent bedtime routines, and addressing potential disorders are essential for achieving truly restorative sleep. Quality sleep is crucial for overall health, cognitive function, and daily energy levels.
