Squid Game Expands to the US as David Fincher Teams Up With Hwang Dong Hyuk for New Spin-Off

Date:

The global sensation Squid Game is officially branching into the United States, with acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher joining creator Hwang Dong Hyuk to develop a new American spin-off set within the same chilling universe. The new project will introduce a fresh cast, a reimagined storyline, and a US-based arena where a new set of contestants will face deadly high-stakes challenges.

The spin-off has gained increasing buzz since the finale of Squid Game Season 3, which featured Cate Blanchett in a surprise cameo. According to early industry reports, filming for the American edition is expected to begin in February 2026, with production primarily taking place in Los Angeles and various California locations known for large-scale cinematic sets.

Although Netflix has not publicly announced the series yet, the title has been listed on the Film and Television Industry Alliance production database, confirming that Zeus Zamani and Rhett Giles will join Fincher and Hwang Dong Hyuk as producers. The posted synopsis describes the show as an American interpretation of the Korean hit, existing in the same fictional world while showcasing how the twisted games unfold under a different cultural and societal backdrop.

The storyline remains tightly guarded, but insiders suggest that the American version will run parallel to the original Korean narrative, offering viewers fresh lore while maintaining the core intensity that defined the global franchise. Cate Blanchett, who appeared briefly in the Korean finale, is reportedly returning to portray the mysterious recruiter role originally played by Gong Yoo — cementing her as the connective thread between the two worlds.

Hwang Dong Hyuk has previously spoken about Blanchett’s involvement, expressing admiration for the actress and confirming that her placement in the story was crafted to create a powerful transition into the expanding universe. While he has not formally confirmed Fincher’s role through Netflix, the creator acknowledged the growing discussions and the desire to craft a memorable global experience for fans.

Current projections place the release of Squid Game America around Christmas 2028, setting the stage for a major worldwide premiere and an exciting expansion of the record-breaking franchise.
