According to Dr Shankar Zanwar, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist at Gleneagles Hospital, regular intake of psyllium husk helps regulate bowel movements by improving stool texture and frequency. Unlike harsh laxatives, it works naturally with the digestive system and is widely used for constipation management.
Psyllium husk absorbs water inside the intestines and forms a soft gel-like substance. This process increases stool bulk and moisture, making bowel movements smoother and less painful. It supports the body’s natural rhythm without irritating the intestinal lining. When used correctly, it can also reduce bloating caused by hard or slow-moving stools.
Constipation usually develops when waste moves too slowly through the colon. Low fibre intake, inadequate hydration, sedentary habits, stress, and certain medications are common triggers. Over time, these factors can lead to discomfort, gas, and abdominal heaviness.
What sets psyllium husk apart from other remedies is its gentle yet effective action. It naturally softens stools, reduces strain during bowel movements, improves regularity, and can be used safely for longer periods under medical guidance. It does not cause dependency when taken in the right amount.
To use psyllium husk properly, mix the recommended quantity into a full glass of water or milk and consume it immediately, followed by another glass of water. It is usually taken once at night. Adequate fluid intake is essential, and exceeding the advised dose should be avoided.
