If your skin feels rough tight and flaky with a cracked riverbed-like appearance especially during colder months it may not just be ordinary dryness. Even consistent moisturising sometimes fails to bring relief because the root cause can be deeper than seasonal dehydration. According to a dermatologist a common genetic skin condition could be responsible but with the right skincare approach it can be effectively managed.
Dr Scott Walter a US-based dermatologist known for sharing evidence-based skincare advice explains that persistent cracked dry skin is often linked to a condition called ichthyosis vulgaris. This condition affects the skin barrier causing dead skin cells to stick together instead of shedding normally which leads to visible scaling and extreme dryness.
He shares three practical dermatologist-approved skincare tips that can significantly improve skin texture and hydration when dryness keeps coming back despite regular care.
The first and most important step is switching from lotions to rich moisturising creams. Creams are thicker and more effective at sealing in moisture especially for very dry skin. Dr Walter advises applying them immediately after showering while the skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration more effectively.
The second tip focuses on gentle chemical exfoliation. For conditions like ichthyosis vulgaris moisturiser alone is not enough. The buildup of dead skin needs to be broken down so hydration can penetrate properly. Ingredients such as lactic acid and urea help loosen the bonds between dead skin cells allowing smoother skin and better absorption of moisturisers.
The third recommendation is to reassess your cleansing routine. Harsh soaps and foaming cleansers can strip the skin of natural oils worsening dryness. Dr Walter suggests using gentle cleansers or shower oils which help cleanse the skin without disrupting the moisture barrier making them ideal for people with chronic dryness.
With a few smart changes to your skincare routine and the right products persistent dry cracked skin can become smoother healthier and far more comfortable over time.
