Sumit Nagal Leads India to Historic Davis Cup Triumph Over Switzerland in Biel

Date:

Indian tennis scripted a memorable chapter in Biel, Switzerland, as Sumit Nagal guided the team to a landmark 3-1 Davis Cup victory against ninth-seeded Switzerland. This triumph marked India’s first away win in Europe since 1993, when Ramesh Krishnan and Leander Paes defeated France in Cannes. With this breakthrough, India has secured a place in the World Group Qualifiers next year, reigniting belief in the nation’s tennis potential.

The foundation of this stunning upset was laid on Friday, when debutant Dhakshineswar Suresh and returning star Sumit Nagal powered India to a 2-0 lead with commanding singles wins. Although N Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli went down in a close doubles clash against Jakub Paul and Dominic Stricker, Nagal sealed the tie on Saturday with a resounding 6-1, 6-3 victory over 2025 Australian Open junior champion Henry Bernet.

India’s captain Rohit Rajpal praised the team’s resilience, calling the win “a huge moment for Indian tennis.” His bold decision to field Suresh, a 25-year-old collegiate player ranked 626th, proved pivotal as the towering youngster stunned world No.155 Jerome Kym in straight sets. Rajpal’s vision of deploying a big server on indoor courts paid off brilliantly, with Suresh’s presence at the net unsettling the Swiss opponents.

Nagal, returning to Davis Cup action after a break, reaffirmed his status as India’s singles spearhead. Currently ranked 290, the former top-100 player displayed grit and consistency, notching back-to-back wins against Marc-Andrea Huesler and Bernet. His performance not only secured victory but also reinforced his reputation as India’s most dependable singles player.

Rajpal emphasized that this win should inspire India’s next generation of players, including Aryan Shah and Karan Singh, who were part of the larger squad. He noted that the triumph reflects a transitional phase in Indian tennis, where younger talents can learn from veterans’ success and carry forward the momentum.

For Nagal, Suresh, and the Indian team, this was more than a win—it was a message of revival. After decades of struggles in Europe, Indian tennis now has renewed hope and confidence heading into future challenges.
