Swiatek Battles Back from Brink to Defeat Rybakina in French Open Thriller

Date:

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek delivered a gritty and emotional comeback win against Elena Rybakina in a gripping fourth-round clash at the French Open 2025. The match, which lasted two hours and 30 minutes on the iconic Court Philippe Chatrier, saw Swiatek overcome a disastrous start to clinch a 1-6 6-3 7-5 victory and secure her place in the quarter-finals.

Swiatek the defending French Open champion and four-time Roland Garros winner showed a full spectrum of emotion during the match—nerves frustration determination and finally triumph. Facing the world No.11 and 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina the 24-year-old Pole struggled in the first set where she was overpowered and outplayed by her Kazakh opponent.

The early signs looked ominous for Swiatek who has not had the smoothest year on tour. Struggling with form and having dealt with off-court controversy following a doping-related suspension in 2024 Swiatek entered the match as the world No.5 without a title this season. Her game has been patchy and her confidence visibly shaken since the fallout.

Rybakina raced to a 6-1 win in the opening set as Swiatek failed to hold her serve and looked out of rhythm. However Swiatek began mounting her comeback midway through the second set using more topspin and relying on longer rallies to frustrate Rybakina’s rhythm. After going down 0-2 in the second she surged back winning six of the next seven games to level the match.

The decider was tense with both players exchanging breaks and the momentum constantly shifting. At 5-5 Swiatek broke Rybakina and then calmly served out the match securing the win with a forehand cross-court winner. She roared in celebration fist-pumping and thumping her chest in a rare emotional outburst for someone known for her composure.

Speaking after the match Swiatek admitted that she didn’t believe she had a strong chance of winning at certain points but reminded herself to “just keep fighting.” She credited her ability to adapt under pressure for the turnaround and said each game helped her relax and return to her natural style of play.

Her next opponent will be Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina who earlier stunned Italy’s 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini with a 4-6 7-6(6) 6-1 comeback to reach her fifth French Open quarter-final. Known for her resilience in big matches Svitolina poses a tough challenge for Swiatek.

Swiatek remains unbeaten in her last 25 matches at Roland Garros and no other active player including Novak Djokovic has matched her dominance on the Parisian clay.

Meanwhile India’s journey at the French Open came to an end as both Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri bowed out in the men’s doubles third round. Bopanna and partner Adam Pavlasek lost 2-6 6-7(5) to second-seeded Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara while Bhambri and Robert Galloway went down 4-6 4-6 to the American duo Evan King and Christian Harrison.

As the quarter-finals approach all eyes remain on Swiatek whose tenacity and mental fortitude continue to define her campaign in Paris.
