Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Christy’ Suffers Record Box Office Crash With Near 100% Drop and No Global Earnings

Date:

Sydney Sweeney’s latest biographical drama Christy has faced a severe setback at the box office, marking one of the sharpest declines for a Hollywood release in recent years. Despite the buzz around Sweeney’s physical transformation and intense preparation for the role of legendary boxer Christy Martin, the film failed to gain momentum during its opening days and collapsed even further in its second weekend.

Industry trackers report that Christy opened with just $1.3 million domestically, placing it among the weakest wide-release debuts in modern Hollywood history. The situation worsened when the film’s second-weekend earnings dropped by a staggering 92%, pulling in merely $108,000 and pushing its total US collection to around $1.9 million as of November 20. The movie has now broken records for one of the steepest second-week falls for any major release.

The film’s global performance has been even more discouraging. Outside North America, Christy debuted with only $14,000 and was pulled from theatres shortly afterward, resulting in a $0 overseas total during its second weekend. With worldwide earnings stuck below the $2 million mark against a reported budget exceeding $15 million, industry experts expect the film to conclude its lifetime run far below recovery.

Directed by David Michôd, Christy portrays the journey of Christy Martin—one of America’s most celebrated female boxers from the 1990s—whose life took a tragic turn when her husband and trainer attempted to murder her. Sydney Sweeney underwent intense boxing training and gained significant weight to portray the athlete authentically. The film features performances from Ben Foster Merritt Wever Katy O’Brian Ethan Embry and Chad L Coleman.
