Frank E Flowers’ The Bluff arrives with the promise of a gritty pirate thriller and delivers moments of intense action powered almost entirely by Priyanka Chopra. From the very first major fight sequence the film sparks to life as Chopra’s character unleashes a level of raw physicality rarely seen in mainstream pirate adventures. Unfortunately once the action slows the film struggles to stay afloat turning what could have been a compelling genre entry into an uneven and largely forgettable experience.
Set in a picturesque Caribbean settlement the story follows Ercell Borden a quiet fish trader hiding a violent past. Her fragile peace is shattered when a ruthless pirate Connor resurfaces dragging her back into a world she tried to escape. Forced to protect her family Ercell embraces her former identity as the feared Bloody Mary a name that once struck terror across the seas.
The narrative positions Priyanka Chopra as both an underdog and a legend. Physically smaller than most of her opponents she compensates with precision skill speed and near-superhuman combat instincts. These sequences are undeniably gripping and form the backbone of the film. The brutal R-rated violence is relentless with bloodshed and bone-crunching encounters unfolding against serene coastal backdrops creating a stark and unsettling contrast.
Where The Bluff falters is in its storytelling. The plot follows a predictable path leaning heavily on familiar action tropes and obvious twists. Character arcs feel thin and supporting roles lack depth leaving much of the emotional weight solely on Chopra’s shoulders. While the film attempts to mask its narrative shortcomings with stylised violence and slick choreography it never quite rises above its formulaic structure.
Priyanka Chopra emerges as the film’s undeniable strength. She balances savagery with emotional restraint giving her character a rare humanity within an ultra-violent framework. Her performance suggests immense potential for female-led action films when paired with stronger scripts. Sadly the surrounding material fails to fully support her efforts.
Despite a capable cast and a promising premise The Bluff ultimately underdelivers. It offers flashes of brilliance in action but struggles to justify its feature-length runtime. While Chopra’s performance is worth watching the film as a whole feels like a missed opportunity in a genre that deserves sharper execution and bolder storytelling.
