Top 8 Major Changes Coming to Dubai in 2026

Date:

Dubai is set for a transformative year in 2026 with several major initiatives that will impact daily life, travel, and lifestyle across the emirate. From transport innovations to environmental policies and digital banking reforms, residents and visitors alike can expect exciting developments in the city.

One of the most anticipated projects is the Etihad Rail passenger service, which will finally connect all seven emirates, drastically reducing travel times between key cities. Freight tracks are already operational, and passenger services are expected to start in 2026, marking a significant milestone for UAE transportation.

Flying taxis are also scheduled to debut, offering low-cost, 10-minute flights between popular city landmarks, including Dubai International Airport, Atlantis The Royal, Dubai Mall, and the American University in Dubai. The first vertiport is expected to be ready by the end of March, promising a futuristic alternative to road transport.

Dubai Fountain will receive its full aesthetic and technological upgrade in the first half of 2026, featuring enhanced choreography, cutting-edge lighting, and improved sound systems to create an even more spectacular display for visitors.

Sugar tax regulations will shift to a tiered excise system based on sugar content, impacting soft drinks and beverages with artificial sweeteners starting January 1, 2026. This GCC-wide initiative aims to promote healthier consumption patterns and align with regional public health policies.

The phase 3 single-use plastic ban will also come into effect in 2026, banning plastic plates, food containers, tableware, and drink cups with lids. This initiative encourages sustainability and eco-friendly practices throughout the emirate.

In the financial sector, banks are phasing out one-time passwords (OTPs) for transactions, replacing them with more secure authentication methods via mobile banking apps. This transition will be completed by March 2026, enhancing digital payment security for all users.

The GCC Unified Visa, named “GCC Grand Tours,” will launch, allowing streamlined travel across UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Oman. Citizens and residents will soon be able to apply online for this unified visa, easing cross-border travel within the Gulf region.

Finally, 2026 has been declared the Year of the Family in the UAE, focusing on initiatives and projects that support family growth, stability, and cohesion. Announced by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this theme emphasizes the central role of the family in society and national prosperity.
