Australia’s Travis Head etched his name deeper into Ashes folklore after registering his third century of the 2025–26 Ashes series during the fifth and final Test against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Resuming Day 3 unbeaten on 91, the left-hander wasted little time in reaching the milestone, needing just 18 deliveries to bring up his hundred with a boundary off Josh Tongue. It marked his 12th Test century overall and sparked loud celebrations from the Sydney crowd, as Head unfurled his now-iconic helmet-on-bat celebration.
At 32, Head has enjoyed a standout Ashes campaign, scoring heavily across conditions and venues. With centuries in Perth, Adelaide, and Sydney, he has now reached three hundreds in a single Ashes series, placing him alongside legendary openers Matthew Hayden, Sir Alastair Cook, Michael Vaughan, Michael Slater, and Bill Lawry. In the modern era, only Head, Hayden, Cook, and Vaughan have achieved this rare feat in an Ashes series.
Head’s innings in Sydney was another display of controlled aggression and precision. He eventually fell for 163 off 166 balls, an innings laced with 24 fours and a six, and also recorded the fifth-fastest 150 in Ashes history, reaching the landmark in just 152 balls. His ability to score freely on both sides of the wicket and punish even marginal errors has made him one of the most difficult batters for England to contain.
Across the series, Head has accumulated 600 runs in nine innings at an average of 66.66 with an impressive strike rate of 87.59. His tally puts him well ahead of England’s top run-scorer Joe Root, who trails by more than 200 runs. Root himself acknowledged Head’s impact, praising his hand-eye coordination, clear batting method, and knack for applying pressure at key moments.
With consistent performances at seven different Australian venues and a dominant Ashes showing, Travis Head’s 2025–26 campaign will be remembered as one of the defining individual performances of the series, reinforcing his status as a modern Ashes great.
