UK doctor reveals easy chia seed trick to boost digestion and improve taste

Date:

Chia seeds are widely praised in the health and weight management world for their high fibre content healthy fats and gut-supporting properties. They are rich in both soluble and insoluble fibre which helps support digestion keeps you full for longer and nourishes beneficial gut bacteria. Despite their benefits many people stop eating chia seeds because of their slippery gel-like texture that can be off-putting. Now a UK surgeon has shared a simple method that could change how you consume them forever.

Dr Karan Rajan a UK-based surgeon and popular health educator has suggested grinding chia seeds into a fine powder to make them easier to eat and potentially more effective for gut health. In a recent social media video he explained that powdered chia seeds keep all their fibre benefits while offering better texture and smoother digestion. By removing the slimy mouthfeel this method helps more people stick to their daily chia routine without discomfort.

According to Dr Rajan grinding chia seeds does not damage their fibre or reduce their prebiotic value. Instead it changes how the fibre behaves in the digestive system. Powdered chia seeds absorb water more evenly which helps hydrate the colon and allows gut bacteria to access the fibre more efficiently. This leads to steadier fermentation and improved production of short-chain fatty acids which are essential for gut health. In simple terms the fibre stays the same but the digestive benefits improve.

Another major advantage is taste and versatility. Ground chia seeds blend smoothly into yoghurt oatmeal and smoothies without creating a jelly-like texture. They can also be used in baking as a plant-based egg alternative while maintaining better consistency. Dr Rajan also points out that grinding breaks the outer seed coat allowing digestive enzymes to better access omega-3 fatty acids inside the seed. Research suggests this can significantly increase omega-3 absorption compared to whole chia seeds.

Grinding chia seeds at home is quick and easy using a coffee grinder or spice grinder for around 30 seconds. However Dr Rajan advises proper storage as ground seeds can oxidise faster. Keeping the powder in an airtight container in the refrigerator helps preserve freshness and nutritional value. This simple change could make chia seeds more enjoyable while delivering the same fibre with better overall results.
