Unusual Food Pairings to Try: From Spaghetti Dal Makhani to Dhokla with Aamras

Date:

Chef Nehal Karkera has revealed a list of quirky food combinations that push the limits of culinary curiosity and might just surprise your taste buds in the best way. For adventurous eaters who love experimenting with new flavours and textures, these ten offbeat pairings might be worth a shot.

Chef Nehal believes food should be playful and sometimes even bizarre. He gathered unusual suggestions through his social media followers and taste-tested them himself — all in the spirit of food fun. Think ice cream with fries or the sweet crunch of cucumber sprinkled with sugar.

For example, slicing up chilled cucumber with sugar can mimic the nostalgic flavour of watermelon. Or try mixing port wine with Thums Up, a twist popular in parts of Goa, for an Indian-style sangria.

In a true cultural mash-up, spaghetti topped with creamy dal makhani becomes a fusion comfort dish that works like an Indian version of Alfredo pasta. Other combinations include dal chawal with crunchy aloo bhujia, upma with spicy mango pickle, or a budget-friendly Maggi burrito wrapped in a chapati.

Even sweet and savoury fans get something to savour — from pairing Masala Lays chips with Nutella to dunking hot French fries into vanilla ice cream. If you’re feeling extra experimental, try fluffy dhokla soaked in aamras for a breakfast treat that tastes like pancakes and syrup but with a Gujarati twist.

Nehal says these crazy combos might never make it to a five-star menu, but they deserve a spot in your next midnight snack session.
