Viktor Gyökeres Breaks Goal Drought as Arsenal Climb to Premier League Summit Before Christmas

Date:

Viktor Gyökeres rediscovered his scoring touch at the perfect moment as Arsenal edged past Everton with a narrow 1-0 victory to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League heading into Christmas. The decisive goal came from the penalty spot, ending Gyökeres’ long wait for a goal and restoring the Gunners’ two-point lead at the summit after Manchester City briefly moved ahead earlier in the day.

Arsenal found it difficult to dominate proceedings at Goodison Park, struggling to break down a depleted Everton side. However, patience paid off late in the first half when a corner delivery from Declan Rice resulted in a handball inside the box. Bukayo Saka stepped aside, allowing Gyökeres to confidently convert the penalty past Jordan Pickford. The goal proved decisive, marking Arsenal’s third time at the top of the table at Christmas in the last four seasons.

Despite creating several chances, Mikel Arteta’s side failed to extend their lead and were forced to defend resolutely. Everton threatened sporadically, but Arsenal’s defence held firm to secure a crucial clean sheet. Missed opportunities from Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard and Martin Zubimendi kept the contest tense until the final whistle. Still, the result ensured Arsenal maintained momentum in the title race, delivering a timely boost as Arteta celebrated another milestone in charge of the club.
