Vinicius Jr Delays Real Madrid Contract Talks Amid Growing Tensions With Manager Xabi Alonso

Date:

Real Madrid have been hit with unexpected uncertainty as star forward Vinicius Jr has reportedly paused discussions over a new contract due to a strained relationship with head coach Xabi Alonso. According to multiple reports, the Brazilian winger has communicated to club president Florentino Pérez that he is uncomfortable committing to an extension under the current circumstances.

Although Vinicius remains tied to the club until 2027 with a massive €1 billion release clause, negotiations that were previously seen as straightforward have now stalled. The shift is said to have originated from internal disagreements stretching back several months, beginning with Vinicius being considered for the bench and shifted to an unfamiliar right-wing role during the Club World Cup earlier in the year.

Since then, his playing time has noticeably declined, with the forward completing only a handful of full matches across all competitions. Tensions escalated during Real Madrid’s 2–1 win over Barcelona in October, where Vinicius — after delivering a standout performance — reacted angrily to being substituted and walked straight down the tunnel. While he issued apologies to the squad and Pérez afterward, his gestures noticeably excluded any mention of Alonso.

Sources close to the Brazilian suggest a collapse of trust, highlighting reduced involvement, tactical disagreements, and the Clasico incident as signs that Alonso has lost faith in the winger. Meanwhile, club insiders insist that squad rotation has been clearly communicated and that the situation has been exaggerated externally. Alonso has publicly maintained that he values Vinicius and that rotation is essential over a long season.

Real Madrid’s renewal proposal is believed to be worth around €20 million net annually, while Vinicius’s representatives are pushing for a package closer to €30 million with bonuses. However, most reports agree that the conflict is not primarily financial — the core issue is whether Vinicius still holds a central role in Alonso’s long-term project.

As things stand, the 24-year-old has not requested a transfer but has left the door open to future possibilities. Unless relations improve or his status within the lineup changes significantly, Real Madrid’s vision of making Vinicius the cornerstone of their next generation hangs in the balance.
