The controversy surrounding alleged abuse directed at Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has intensified following fresh developments from UEFA’s ongoing investigation. The incident took place during Benfica’s Champions League playoff clash against Real Madrid in Lisbon and led to a lengthy stoppage after Vinicius raised serious allegations on the pitch.
According to reports Gianluca Prestianni has submitted his testimony to UEFA confirming that he used an anti-gay insult in Spanish toward Vinicius Junior. The Benfica attacker has denied making a racist remark and stated that he did not refer to the Brazilian forward using racially charged language.
The flashpoint occurred in the second half shortly after Vinicius scored the decisive goal of the match. During his celebration Vinicius accused Prestianni of abuse while covering his face with his shirt prompting the referee to halt play for nearly ten minutes. UEFA later confirmed that an official investigation had been launched into the incident.
Real Madrid have reportedly submitted their own supporting material to UEFA as part of the inquiry. Adding to the seriousness of the case Kylian Mbappe claimed after the match that he heard repeated abusive remarks directed at Vinicius during the confrontation.
Under UEFA disciplinary regulations abuse based on sexual orientation carries the same punishment threshold as racist conduct. Article 14 states that any individual found guilty of insulting human dignity on grounds including race gender or sexual orientation may face a minimum suspension of ten matches or another significant sanction.
Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa addressed the situation in a press conference expressing strong support for Vinicius. He said the player was deeply affected by the incident and stressed that such behaviour has no place in football or society. Arbeloa added that the case presents an opportunity for UEFA to demonstrate firm action rather than empty statements.
The final decision now rests with UEFA as the football world awaits a ruling that could set an important precedent in the fight against discrimination in the sport.
