Virgil van Dijk Slams Fans for Disrupting Diogo Jota Tribute at Community Shield Final

Date:

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has expressed deep disappointment after a small group of supporters disrupted a moment of silence held in memory of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva before the Community Shield clash at Wembley Stadium. The tribute was organized following the tragic car accident in July that claimed the lives of the 28-year-old forward and his brother in Zamora, Spain.

Before kick-off, players and staff from both Liverpool and Crystal Palace gathered for a solemn moment of silence. However, a minority of Crystal Palace fans broke the quiet, prompting other Palace supporters to call for silence and Liverpool fans to voice their disapproval.

Speaking after the match, Van Dijk did not hide his frustration. “Yes, I am disappointed. That’s the only thing I can say. I don’t know who did that, but there were many trying to quiet it down, which obviously didn’t help the moment. You can’t control 80,000 people, but if those responsible can go home and feel happy about themselves, that says it all,” said the Dutch defender.

Liverpool fans paid further tribute with a passionate rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone as wreaths were laid on the pitch. A giant white banner featuring Jota’s name, image, and shirt number 20 was unfurled in the stands. In the 20th minute of play, supporters broke into applause in Jota’s memory — a moment made even more emotional as Jeremie Frimpong scored, putting Liverpool 2-1 ahead.

Despite the tribute and strong performance, Liverpool ultimately lost the trophy to Crystal Palace after a penalty shootout defeat. The match was Liverpool’s first major outing since the passing of Jota, and the emotional atmosphere highlighted both the unity and tensions present on such a solemn occasion.
