India’s defeat in the Kolkata Test against South Africa has sparked an intense debate over the nature of the pitch used for the match. Despite head coach Gautam Gambhir defending the surface, several former cricketers and analysts have voiced concern, suggesting that India’s preference for excessively spin-friendly tracks may be backfiring. The match ended in just 2.5 days with the hosts falling short by 30 runs while chasing 124 as India were dismissed for 93 in the final innings.
Sourav Ganguly the CAB president revealed on Day 3 that the pitch had intentionally not been watered for four days following a request from the Indian team management. Gambhir later confirmed that the pitch was prepared exactly as the team wanted. However many prominent names including Michael Vaughan Anil Kumble Dale Steyn and Cheteshwar Pujara criticised the surface insisting India should have opted for a more balanced pitch given their overall strength compared to the Proteas.
Former India batter Wasim Jaffer has now also shared his view urging the current management to revert to the kind of pitches used during Virat Kohli’s captaincy between 2016 and 2020. Jaffer pointed out on social media that India’s advantage diminishes on extreme spinning tracks where opposition spinners tend to perform equally well. He referenced earlier lessons from the New Zealand series and advised returning to classic home pitches that previously produced successful results.
India’s performance at home under Gambhir has come under scrutiny as the team has lost four of their last six Tests on home soil. Under his tenure India have yet to defeat any SENA nation in the Test format suffering losses to New Zealand and Australia while drawing a five match series against England. With South Africa now leading 1-0 in the two match series India can no longer win the contest.
Following the defeat Gambhir stated that the players had no excuses and that the pitch played exactly as expected. He emphasised that the inability of the batters to chase a low total was the primary reason for the loss. India and South Africa will now meet for the second Test in Guwahati starting November 22 where the conditions will once again be in the spotlight.
