Clogs have become a favourite choice for many people thanks to their slip on design lightweight feel and instant comfort. From quick errands to standing for hours at work these shoes are often treated as an all day solution. However an orthopaedic specialist is now warning that long term use of clogs may quietly harm your foot health over time.
Mumbai based orthopaedic surgeon and health educator Dr Manan Vora recently explained that while clogs such as Crocs feel soft and easy they often fail to provide the structural support required for prolonged wear. Their relaxed fit may feel pleasant initially but it does not stabilise the foot the way supportive footwear should.
According to Dr Vora most clogs lack proper arch support and a firm heel cup. This means the foot is not held securely inside the shoe forcing the toes to grip while walking in order to maintain balance. Over time this repeated gripping can lead to stress on the arches heels and surrounding tendons.
He further explains that extended use of clogs can be particularly problematic for people with flat feet older adults and those who spend long hours walking or standing. The absence of heel stability can also increase the risk of strain discomfort and minor injuries especially during longer walks or physical activity.
While clogs are not completely harmful they should not be mistaken for supportive footwear. Dr Vora advises limiting their use to low demand activities such as short outings light household work or mostly seated tasks. For daily wear or physically demanding routines shoes with strong arch support and firm heel control are essential for maintaining long term foot health.
The key takeaway is moderation. Clogs may be comfortable but relying on them too often can affect posture balance and foot mechanics in the long run. Choosing the right footwear for the right activity can make a significant difference to overall mobility and comfort.
