Wearing Earbuds All Day Could Trigger Skin Problems: Dermatologist Explains Causes and Prevention

Date:

Using earbuds throughout the day may be convenient, but it could silently harm your skin. According to leading dermatologist Dr. Rinky Kapoor, co-founder and director of The Esthetic Clinics, long-term earbud use can lead to skin breakouts, irritation, and infections around the ear and jawline.

While most people know that prolonged earbud use can affect hearing, fewer realize it can also impact skin health. Wearing earbuds for several hours traps heat, sweat, and oil, creating a closed environment that allows bacteria to grow and clog pores. This can result in a condition known as acne mechanica—breakouts caused by friction, pressure, and moisture.

Dr. Kapoor explained, “Extended earbud use forms a warm and humid zone that blocks pores, leading to inflammation. For some, this results in acne, while others may experience irritation due to earbud materials like silicone or metal. In some cases, it may cause folliculitis—small infections in the hair follicles from bacterial transfer.”

Skin issues can appear in various forms. Acne breakouts look like tiny bumps or blocked pores, allergic reactions cause itching and redness, and bacterial infections may develop as painful pustules or boils.

How to Prevent Earbud-Related Skin Problems

Dr. Kapoor suggested a few effective tips to minimize risks:

  • Clean earbuds daily using alcohol wipes, and avoid sharing them.
  • Take short breaks—remove earbuds every hour or switch to over-ear headphones for extended calls or music sessions.
  • Clean your skin gently using a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser, and apply a light moisturizer to protect the skin barrier.
  • If early irritation or pimples appear, use benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid creams.

However, she cautioned that persistent acne or scarring should not be ignored. Consulting a dermatologist is essential for proper diagnosis, as recurring lesions may need medical creams or allergy tests.

This reminder is especially important for those who wear earbuds daily at work, while traveling, or during workouts. Maintaining hygiene and skin balance can help you enjoy your music safely without harming your skin.
