Why Your Morning Coffee Triggers Bowel Movements According to Digestive Health Expert

Date:

Many people rely on their daily cup of coffee to kickstart their morning, but for a large number of drinkers, it also triggers a quick trip to the bathroom. While it may seem like a funny coincidence, digestive health specialists say there is clear science behind why coffee can stimulate bowel movements so rapidly.

Dr Joseph Salhab, a Florida-based gastroenterologist who focuses on digestion and gut health, explains that nearly one-third of regular coffee drinkers experience this urgent need to use the restroom shortly after drinking their brew. He notes that caffeine is one major factor, as it can activate the colon within minutes, encouraging digestive movement and speeding up the natural process of elimination.

Coffee has additional effects beyond caffeine. Dr Salhab highlights that coffee can prompt the gallbladder to release bile and digestive enzymes, which further stimulates the gastrointestinal tract. The warmth of a hot beverage can also naturally encourage bowel activity, which is why even warm water may have a similar though milder effect.

Another lesser-known contributor involves antioxidants found in coffee. These compounds can support a healthy balance of gut bacteria, and changes in gut microbiota can influence how often a person feels the urge to pass stool.

For individuals who love coffee but want to avoid the urgent bathroom trips, Dr Salhab suggests a few practical alternatives. Choosing drinks with lower caffeine such as green tea, opting for cold brew or iced coffee, or switching to decaf can help reduce the laxative effect while still offering health benefits and the comforting ritual of a morning beverage.
