Wimbledon Drama 2025: Taylor Fritz Furious as Match Suspension Sparks Crowd Outrage Over Curfew Decision

Date:

Unexpected drama unfolded at Wimbledon 2025 on Court 1 as top seed Taylor Fritz was left visibly frustrated when officials suspended his gripping first-round battle against France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard late Monday night. The match stoppage came just after Fritz staged a remarkable comeback to push the match into a fifth set, only for organisers to intervene citing the tournament’s strict 11 p.m. curfew.

Fritz, who recently clinched titles at the Boss Open and Eastbourne and entered Wimbledon as a major contender for a semifinal spot, fought back from losing the opening two sets to level the score 2-2. The American star dramatically recovered from 1-5 down in the fourth-set tie-breaker, winning seven of the next eight points to force a final set. But before momentum could carry him forward, tournament officials stepped in, halting play with almost 40 minutes left before the curfew deadline.

The Court 1 crowd erupted in loud boos when the chair umpire delivered the announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, due to the late time of the day, we will not be able to finish the match. Therefore, the match will be suspended until tomorrow. Play is suspended.” Many fans were left questioning why the players were not allowed to continue given the remaining time.

As per the agreement with the local Merton Council, Wimbledon is obliged to stop matches by 11 p.m. every night. Interestingly, a similar scenario unfolded on Centre Court where Alexander Zverev’s match was also stopped just before the curfew, even though the players were level at one set apiece.

The postponement could swing the momentum back in Perricard’s favour as he now has the chance to regroup for the final set on Tuesday. Perricard had impressed with 33 aces and no break points conceded but missed the opportunity to close out the match on Monday. Tennis commentators pointed out that Fritz would have preferred to play on, riding the wave of his hard-earned comeback.

Co-commentator Todd Woodbridge remarked that the officials faced a difficult call: “It’s just gone 10:15pm, the curfew is at 11. If it’s a long set there’s a risk they’d have to stop mid-set. Would you want to do that?” Meanwhile, Ronald McIntosh noted that the suspension gives Perricard valuable time to rest and reset before returning for what will now be a decisive one-set shootout.

After shock early exits for Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev, the drama around Fritz’s match only added to an opening day filled with unexpected twists at this year’s Championships. Fans will be watching closely to see who seizes the advantage when play resumes on Tuesday.
