World Stroke Day 2025: Expert Warns About Hard-to-Control Hypertension That Intensifies Silent Stroke Risk

Date:

As World Stroke Day is observed on October 29, health experts are urging the public to be more aware of a dangerous form of high blood pressure that raises stroke risk without showing early warning signs. This year’s theme, “Every minute counts,” emphasizes how timely treatment can save lives and prevent long-term disability.

According to the World Stroke Organization, nearly 90% of stroke cases are linked to preventable lifestyle factors, and hypertension remains the most critical trigger. While general high blood pressure is already considered risky, doctors are now highlighting a more severe form called resistant hypertension (RHTN) — often overlooked yet more damaging.

To explain this condition further, Dr. Babu Ezhumalai, Senior Consultant, Interventional Cardiology at MGM Healthcare, Chennai, stated that resistant hypertension remains high even after taking three or more antihypertensive medicines, including a diuretic. This stubborn condition continues to strain vital organs, greatly increasing the risk of a silent stroke.

A 2023 study showed that people with resistant hypertension are 14% more likely to suffer a stroke compared to those with controlled blood pressure. In India, millions may have this condition but remain unaware, as symptoms often appear only when serious complications have already begun.

Common warning signs, although not always present, may include:

  • Persistent headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nosebleeds
  • Fatigue due to organ stress

How to manage resistant hypertension
Doctors recommend a combined approach of medical treatment and lifestyle improvements:

  1. Regular BP monitoring — Home tracking + 24-hour ABPM to identify hidden spikes
  2. Heart-healthy diet — Such as the DASH diet to lower sodium intake and improve control
  3. Daily exercise — Walking, swimming, or cycling to maintain cardiovascular fitness
  4. Sleep and stress management — Reducing mental strain to protect the heart and brain

Healthcare professionals strongly advise early diagnosis and continuous monitoring to prevent life-threatening complications. On World Stroke Day 2025, the message remains clear — quick action, awareness, and consistent care can save lives.
