Despite scoring a century in the first innings, Jaiswal’s six dropped catches — including multiple crucial ones in the slips — proved costly. The backlash intensified after a video surfaced of Jaiswal smiling and dancing with the English crowd shortly after he missed a catch that allowed Ben Duckett to continue his charge toward a match-winning century.
The clip, captured during Day 5 of the Test, didn’t sit well with Indian cricket fans, especially after Duckett’s missed opportunity led to a stunning 149-run knock. The timing of Jaiswal’s interaction with the crowd appeared ill-judged in light of India’s defeat, where England chased down 371 — their second-highest successful chase in Test history.
Jaiswal’s dropped catches off Jasprit Bumrah, who had earlier taken a five-wicket haul, and another chance that allowed Duckett to escape near his century milestone, fueled further criticism. England’s openers Duckett and Zak Crawley (65) had already set the tone with a massive 188-run opening stand. Although Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur provided a glimmer of hope with late breakthroughs, Joe Root (53*) and debutant Jamie Smith (44*) wrapped up the game with a composed unbeaten 71-run partnership.
The fielding lapses, particularly Jaiswal’s errors, were a central factor in India’s collapse. The celebratory video following such costly mistakes was perceived as insensitive by many, given the match’s significance and the team’s precarious position.
