Team India’s limited-overs star Shreyas Iyer is set to remain out of professional cricket for nearly two months following a spleen laceration sustained during the recent ODI series against Australia. The senior batter, who serves as India’s ODI vice-captain, was forced to undergo an urgent medical procedure in Sydney to control internal bleeding after the injury. Thankfully, he is now stable and has been shifted out of the intensive care unit.
The setback means Iyer is certain to miss the home ODI series against South Africa scheduled for next month. His availability for India’s following assignment — a three-match ODI series against New Zealand in January — is still doubtful as he is expected to be short on match fitness.
The injury could also impact Iyer’s chances of making India’s final preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026, where the team management plans to finalize their squad well in advance. If he remains unavailable for the New Zealand fixtures, Iyer’s next opportunity to return to international cricket may come only during India’s white-ball tour of England in July next year.
The injury occurred at the Sydney Cricket Ground when Iyer attempted a tough catch to dismiss Alex Carey. His condition worsened soon after he was helped off the field, leading to immediate hospitalization. Subsequent scans revealed dangerous internal bleeding.
While there were early claims of surgery, BCCI officials clarified that Iyer instead underwent a minimally invasive interventional trans-catheter embolisation, a standard procedure where a catheter is used to seal the bleeding artery. The procedure was performed under imaging guidance to prevent further damage and ensure a safe recovery.
India will now hope for a smooth rehabilitation period as Iyer begins his road back to full fitness, with selectors keeping a close eye on how quickly he can return to competitive form.
