Country music fans witnessed a deeply emotional moment at the 59th CMA Awards, where Kenny Chesney delivered a moving tribute to late Nashville songwriter Brett James, who tragically died earlier this year in a plane crash. Chesney performed When the Sun Goes Down, a track co-written by James, as a portrait of the celebrated lyricist appeared on the arena screen, creating a touching silence across the audience.
Brett James, known globally for crafting chart-topping hits, including Carrie Underwood’s iconic Jesus, Take the Wheel, was remembered as one of Nashville’s most gifted storytellers. Artists and fans alike mourned his loss, with Underwood sharing that his passing was “too great to put into words,” reflecting the immense influence he had on the country music industry.
Throughout his multi-decade career, James collaborated with some of the biggest names in music, working alongside Kelly Clarkson, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, and Martina McBride. His songwriting legacy includes dozens of award-winning tracks that shaped modern country music.
James’ life was cut short on September 18, when the plane he was piloting crashed while attempting to land at Macon County Airport, a tragedy that also claimed the lives of his wife and stepdaughter. The CMA tribute served as a moment of collective remembrance for a creative force whose work touched millions.
The 59th CMA Awards, held in Nashville and broadcast on ABC, were hosted by Lainey Wilson, who dominated the evening with multiple wins including Album of the Year for Whirlwind, Entertainer of the Year, and Female Vocalist of the Year. The night’s biggest accolades also went to You Look Like You Love Me, which earned Song of the Year, Single of the Year, and Music Video of the Year. Other winners included Cody Johnson as Male Vocalist of the Year, Paul Franklin as Musician of the Year, Zach Top as New Artist of the Year, and Vince Gill receiving the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.
