India national cricket team provide update on Rinku Singh ahead of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe national cricket team

Date:

The India national cricket team has clarified the situation surrounding Rinku Singh’s availability for their crucial Super 8 fixture against the Zimbabwe national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The middle-order batter had temporarily left the squad earlier this week to travel to New Delhi after his father fell ill, raising doubts about his participation in the must-win encounter.

India are under pressure following a heavy defeat to South Africa national cricket team in their opening Super 8 match in Ahmedabad. With qualification for the semi-finals at stake, team combinations and player availability have become key talking points ahead of the Chennai showdown.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that Rinku is expected to rejoin the squad before the match. He stated that the player had travelled home due to his father’s health concerns but is likely to return to the camp by the evening prior to the game. This update significantly eases concerns for team management, who would otherwise have faced a reshuffle in the batting order.

With Rinku’s return appearing imminent, the primary selection debate now revolves around India’s bowling combination. The management must decide whether to strengthen the spin attack by including Kuldeep Yadav as an additional specialist spinner and whether vice-captain Axar Patel will come back into the playing XI. Axar had been left out against South Africa in favour of Washington Sundar due to tactical considerations against left-handed batters. However, with Zimbabwe’s top order dominated by right-handers, Axar could be the preferred option in Chennai.

Another potential change could involve fast bowler Arshdeep Singh if India opt to alter their pace-spin balance.

Acknowledging the stakes, Kotak admitted that playing a World Cup at home naturally brings added expectations and pressure. However, he expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to respond strongly in a high-pressure situation. With semi-final hopes hanging in the balance, India’s clash in Chennai promises to be a defining moment in their T20 World Cup campaign.
