Dubai has taken another major step toward smart mobility with the official rollout of driverless taxis in select parts of the city. The autonomous ride service is now live and can be booked through the Uber app, marking a significant milestone in the emirate’s futuristic transport vision.
Residents and visitors in areas such as Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim can now request a robotaxi by choosing the ‘Autonomous’ ride option while booking an UberX or Uber Comfort trip. The service uses Apollo Go vehicles developed by Chinese tech giant Baidu, bringing cutting-edge innovation to everyday travel.
The introduction follows extensive testing carried out in collaboration with Uber and WeRide since 2025. After successful trials and mapping exercises, around 100 self-driving taxis have been deployed as of late March 2026, with plans for further expansion in the coming years.
These autonomous vehicles operate using advanced artificial intelligence systems combined with high-definition mapping and real-time data processing. Equipped with sensors and smart decision-making technology, the taxis are capable of navigating traffic signals pedestrians intersections and other road conditions while maintaining strict compliance with safety regulations.
The system is backed by significant global experience, with millions of completed rides and extensive driving data contributing to its reliability and efficiency. The vehicles are designed to integrate seamlessly into urban traffic while enhancing convenience for passengers.
The launch aligns with Dubai’s broader Autonomous Transportation Strategy, which aims to make 25 percent of all journeys driverless by 2030. Authorities expect this shift to improve road safety reduce congestion and increase overall productivity across the city.
Officials have highlighted that autonomous taxis will also strengthen first and last-mile connectivity, making it easier for commuters to access public transport networks. Additionally, the technology is expected to benefit a wide range of users including elderly residents and people of determination.
Looking ahead, Dubai plans to expand the fleet to around 4,000 driverless taxis, a move expected to reduce accidents lower emissions and create a more efficient transport ecosystem.
