KKR Defy IPL 2026 Powerplay Trend as Ajinkya Rahane’s Side Keeps Playoff Dream Alive

Date:

Kolkata Knight Riders are proving that there is more than one way to win in the IPL. Despite consistently struggling during the powerplay overs, the team has managed to stay in the playoff race with a unique strategy built around middle-over control and strong finishing performances.

KKR strengthened their IPL 2026 campaign with a convincing eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Chasing a target of 143, KKR completed the run chase in just 14.2 overs, thanks to a sensational unbeaten century from Finn Allen, who smashed 100 runs from only 47 deliveries.

While Allen’s explosive innings grabbed attention, cricket experts highlighted a much more unusual trend behind KKR’s recent victories. Former cricketer Ian Bishop pointed out that KKR have now won four matches this season without actually dominating the powerplay phase.

Against Delhi, KKR were behind after the opening six overs, reaching 43/2 while DC had already scored 55/1. However, KKR once again recovered brilliantly through disciplined bowling and aggressive batting later in the innings.

This pattern has repeated throughout the season. In matches against Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Super Giants, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, KKR either lost or failed to clearly win the powerplay battle. Yet they still managed to secure victories by tightening control during the middle overs and restricting opponents from building momentum.

One of the biggest strengths for KKR this season has been their bowling attack. Against Rajasthan Royals, they reduced a strong 63/0 start to 155/9 by taking regular wickets after the powerplay. Similar collapses were forced against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals, showing KKR’s ability to shift the game even after poor starts.

Finn Allen’s match-winning knock against Delhi added a new dimension to KKR’s campaign. Earlier victories relied heavily on bowling discipline and manageable run chases, but Allen’s attacking approach gave the team a much-needed boost in net run rate and batting confidence.

Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, KKR are building a style that differs from most teams in IPL 2026. Instead of dominating early overs, they are focusing on surviving pressure, controlling the middle phase, and accelerating strongly later in the match.

However, analysts believe this approach carries risk. Consistently losing the powerplay can become dangerous against stronger batting and bowling lineups. Even so, KKR’s ability to recover from difficult starts has made them one of the most unpredictable teams in the tournament.

With momentum building and key players stepping up at the right time, KKR’s unusual formula could still carry them into the IPL 2026 playoffs.
