The latest setback came against Kolkata Knight Riders, who comfortably chased down a modest target in just 14.2 overs. The defeat marked Delhi’s fifth home loss in six matches this season, raising major questions about the team’s inability to perform in familiar conditions.
While Delhi started their home campaign with a victory over Mumbai Indians, their performances since then have been inconsistent and worrying. Despite posting a massive total of 264 against Punjab Kings earlier in the season, they failed to defend it. Soon after, they endured one of the worst batting collapses in IPL history against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, finishing the powerplay at a shocking 13 for 6.
Another painful defeat came against Gujarat Titans, where Delhi narrowly lost by one run despite needing only a couple of runs in the final deliveries. More recently, Chennai Super Kings also secured a convincing win at the same venue.
The repeated failures at home suggest deeper issues within the squad. One concern is the team’s apparent inability to properly understand pitch conditions and adapt strategies accordingly. Another issue could be the mounting pressure of performing in front of home supporters.
Team captain Axar Patel faced criticism after choosing to bat first against Chennai despite rain affecting the pitch conditions before the match. Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin publicly questioned the decision, stating that bowling first may have been a more effective strategy under those circumstances.
Ashwin also suggested that captains should maintain stronger communication with local pitch curators to better understand conditions before making crucial toss decisions. His comments have sparked discussions about whether Delhi’s leadership and planning need improvement, especially at home venues.
Historically, successful IPL franchises such as Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders have built their dominance through strong home performances. Delhi, however, continues to struggle in its own backyard, a trend that has now stretched across multiple seasons.
Although the team still remains mathematically alive in the playoff race, time is running out. With only a few matches remaining, Delhi Capitals must quickly address their home-ground issues if they hope to build a stronger future in upcoming IPL campaigns.
