Delhi Capitals are facing heavy criticism after another disappointing result in the IPL 2026 season, with fans and cricket experts questioning the team management’s decision to keep Prithvi Shaw out of the playing XI throughout the tournament.
The latest setback came after Delhi suffered a crushing defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders, a result that has almost ended their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. Led by Axar Patel, the side has struggled with inconsistent performances and questionable team selections during the season.
One of the biggest debates surrounding the franchise has been the continued absence of Prithvi Shaw despite the team’s batting issues. The explosive opener, known for his aggressive style at the top of the order, has not played a single match in IPL 2026. Even when changes were made to the opening combination, the management opted for alternative players instead of giving Shaw an opportunity.
Former India spinner Murali Kartik openly criticised the decision, expressing surprise that a proven attacking batter like Shaw was ignored despite being part of the squad. According to Kartik, Shaw’s inclusion could have provided greater flexibility and intent at the top of the batting lineup.
Shaw had gone unsold during the IPL 2025 auction before being picked up by Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 season at his base price. Despite regular appearances in the team’s practice sessions and training videos, the franchise has not publicly explained the reason behind his exclusion.
In the match against Kolkata, Delhi Capitals posted a modest total of 142 runs after losing momentum in the middle overs. Pathum Nissanka scored a half-century, but Kolkata’s spin attack, led by Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, restricted Delhi from reaching a competitive score.
Kolkata Knight Riders comfortably chased down the target with eight wickets remaining. Finn Allen starred with a sensational unbeaten century, while Cameron Green provided solid support to finish the game with ease.
As Delhi Capitals prepare for their remaining fixtures, pressure continues to mount on the team management over player selection decisions and the handling of experienced talents like Prithvi Shaw.
