Ravichandran Ashwin Advises Agarkar: Ask Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to Prove World Cup Commitment Through Domestic Cricket

Date:

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has urged the BCCI selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to ask senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to demonstrate their dedication toward India’s 2027 World Cup campaign by participating in domestic cricket and India A matches.

Ashwin’s comments came amid ongoing discussions around Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma as part of India’s long-term strategy for the next ICC World Cup. The move sparked debate among fans and experts, especially with Kohli and Rohit still featuring in the ODI squad for the Australia tour despite uncertainty over their World Cup roles.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin clarified that there is no question regarding Rohit Sharma’s leadership skills, given his recent triumphs in the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy. However, he emphasized that selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir must look at the bigger picture — whether the senior duo can maintain consistency and fitness leading up to 2027.

Ashwin said, “There’s nothing to debate about Rohit’s captaincy. But the selectors must ask if he and Kohli fit into the 2027 World Cup plan. If they are, can they sustain their level of performance while playing limited formats until then? These are crucial questions.”

The former cricketer, who retired from international cricket in 2024, suggested that if selectors want to include Rohit and Kohli in their plans, both should actively participate in the India A series or the Vijay Hazare Trophy. According to him, such matches would not just test their form but also reaffirm their commitment to India’s long-term cricketing roadmap.

“If you want them in your 2027 plans, tell them to play the India A series. If they refuse, ask them to take part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This isn’t about selection—it’s about rhythm and intent. Their presence in domestic cricket would send a clear message about their seriousness,” Ashwin added.

He further stated that no selector would easily drop players of Kohli and Rohit’s stature. “You can’t buy experience like theirs. But the selectors must be clear. If doubts exist about their fitness or future participation, then giving younger players like Gill leadership opportunities makes sense,” he noted.

Backing Shubman Gill’s captaincy, Ashwin explained that grooming him early provides stability in case Rohit becomes unavailable before the World Cup. He also pointed out that training videos or gym sessions don’t decide selections—performance in actual matches does.

Ashwin concluded, “Rohit and Virat’s preparation shows they still want to represent India in 2027. But selectors have to think ahead. The decision to hand over leadership to Gill is logical—it ensures continuity and readiness for the next big ICC event.”
