Cricket legend Anil Kumble has voiced strong criticism of Shubman Gill’s captaincy during the second Test against the West Indies, suggesting that India missed an opportunity to close the game early after enforcing the follow-on. Despite India’s dominance, the Windies showed remarkable resilience with centuries from John Campbell and Shai Hope, forcing the match into the final day in dramatic fashion.
After being asked to bat again on Day 3, West Indies put up a determined fight, frustrating the Indian bowling attack. Even though both Campbell and Hope were dismissed soon after reaching their tons, a spirited last-wicket stand of 79 runs between Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales pushed the total to 390, setting India a modest target of 121 runs.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Kumble shared insights from his conversation with Windies coach Daren Sammy, saying, “The pitch was flat, and India could have created more pressure. Credit to the West Indies batters for their patience and fight. Their application was exactly what Sammy wanted to see.”
Kumble pointed out that India’s field placements and bowling intensity could have been more attacking. “Even the tail-enders batted with great determination. India might have forced mistakes with smarter field settings and tighter bowling,” he added.
Heading into Day 5, India need just 58 runs to secure a 2-0 series victory. Kumble, however, took a moment to praise Shai Hope for his stellar 100, calling it “a statement of intent.” He recalled Hope’s early promise during India’s tour of the Caribbean when he scored a hundred in a practice match under Kumble’s coaching stint. “It’s great to see him regaining form and taking his No. 4 role seriously,” Kumble said.
For India, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav picked up three wickets each in the second innings, wrapping up the Windies’ innings late on Day 4. While India remain firm favorites to seal the series, the Windies’ fightback has sparked discussion about Gill’s decision-making under pressure.
