Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared insights into the transformation of Punjab Kings, crediting the strong partnership between captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting for the team’s recent progress.
Punjab Kings have long struggled to secure their first Indian Premier League title, often facing criticism for inconsistent decisions in auctions and team management. However, the arrival of Iyer as captain alongside Ponting as coach brought renewed direction and stability to the squad.
The team’s improvement became evident last season when Punjab Kings delivered a strong campaign and reached the IPL 2025 final before narrowly losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Their performance marked a significant shift in consistency and competitiveness.
Ashwin highlighted the close working relationship between Iyer and Ponting, describing it as one built on trust and mutual respect. According to him, Ponting’s experience and leadership style have helped ease the pressure on Iyer, allowing him to focus more effectively on both captaincy and batting responsibilities.
He noted that Iyer is open to feedback and values Ponting’s guidance, creating a balanced dynamic where the captain feels supported. This partnership has enabled Iyer to lead with confidence while maintaining a calm and composed approach on the field.
Ashwin also praised Ponting’s dedication behind the scenes, pointing out that the coach remains actively involved in training sessions. He ensures that every player, including those lower in the squad hierarchy, receives attention and opportunities to develop.
Ponting’s hands-on approach and commitment to player growth have contributed to a more cohesive team environment. His ability to manage both players and team structure effectively has played a key role in Punjab Kings’ resurgence.
As the upcoming IPL season approaches, Punjab Kings will aim to build on their recent momentum. With a strong leadership combination in place, the franchise looks better positioned than ever to challenge for its maiden title.
