Australia Revamp Playing XI for Adelaide Ashes Test as Cummins and Lyon Return

Date:

Australia have confirmed key changes to their lineup for the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval, strengthening their side as they aim to seal the series. Pat Cummins has returned to the playing XI after recovering from a back issue, resuming both bowling duties and on-field leadership. Alongside him, experienced off-spinner Nathan Lyon has been recalled, giving Australia a more balanced and tactically flexible bowling attack for the pink-ball Test.

The changes see Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser make way as the hosts opt for a proven combination. Cummins’ comeback brings control and intensity to the pace unit, allowing Australia to manage long spells and apply sustained pressure on England’s batting. His leadership also restores stability, with tactical decision-making once again led by the regular captain on the field.

Nathan Lyon’s inclusion adds a vital spin dimension, particularly important in Adelaide where pitches can offer assistance as the match progresses. His ability to take wickets, control run flow, and support the fast bowlers provides Australia with multiple attacking options across sessions.

The batting order remains unchanged, reflecting confidence in the top seven. Jake Weatherald continues to partner Travis Head at the top, while Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, and Cameron Green form a solid middle order. Alex Carey and Josh Inglis strengthen the lower middle order, extending batting depth.

With a 2–0 lead in the series, Australia’s team selection signals clear intent to dominate at home. For England, the Adelaide Test represents a must-win encounter, while Australia will look to capitalise on momentum and secure the Ashes.
