Avatar Fire and Ash Box Office Report Day 3 Shows Strong Global Start but Misses Year’s Top Opening

Date:

James Cameron’s highly anticipated film Avatar: Fire and Ash has made an impressive global debut, though it has fallen short of becoming the biggest opening of the year. By the end of day three, the third chapter in the Avatar franchise has collected approximately $345 million worldwide, driven largely by robust overseas performance.

The film earned an estimated $88 million in North America during its opening weekend, aligning closely with early industry projections. Internationally, Avatar: Fire and Ash proved especially powerful, generating $257 million from overseas markets. China played a key role in this success, contributing around $57 million, marking one of the strongest Hollywood openings in the region this year. Despite this solid start, the overall total remains lower than Avatar: The Way of Water, which debuted with $441 million globally.

While Avatar: Fire and Ash comfortably crossed the $300 million mark, it was unable to surpass several recent box office heavyweights. Disney’s Zootopia 2 leads the year with a massive $560 million opening, followed by Ne Zha 2 with $431 million. Other films such as Moana 2 and Barbie also recorded higher opening weekend totals, leaving Cameron’s latest epic just outside the top tier of 2025 openings.

The film continues the saga of Jake Sully and Neytiri, portrayed by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, as they fight to protect their family and Pandora from new threats. The story introduces Oona Chaplin in a pivotal antagonist role. The original Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time with nearly $2.9 billion, while The Way of Water amassed $2.3 billion worldwide. Future instalments are already planned for release in 2029 and 2031, ensuring the franchise’s long-term presence at the global box office.
