Back Pain Could Signal Hidden Heart Problems – Cardiologist Explains Three Stages of Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Date:

Back pain is often dismissed as a result of poor posture or muscle strain but cardiologists warn it may sometimes indicate serious heart issues. According to experts sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can occur when the heart’s electrical system malfunctions leading to loss of heartbeat breathing and consciousness. Without immediate medical treatment SCA can be fatal which is why recognizing unusual warning signs including back pain is crucial.

Dr Vikash Goyal Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Paras Health explains that unlike muscle-related discomfort cardiac-linked back pain may feel like pressure or heaviness across the upper back shoulders or jaw. Women in particular may experience back pain nausea or unusual fatigue instead of classic chest pain which often delays diagnosis. When combined with symptoms such as dizziness rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath back pain should be taken seriously and prompt medical care must be sought.

It is essential to distinguish between a heart attack and cardiac arrest. A heart attack occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked while cardiac arrest results from electrical disruption within the heart. Though related they are different events and a heart attack can sometimes trigger cardiac arrest.

The Three Phases of Sudden Cardiac Arrest

  1. Electrical Phase (0–4 minutes): During the first four minutes the heart experiences chaotic rhythms and a defibrillator shock can be most effective for survival.
  2. Circulatory Phase (4–10 minutes): Between four and ten minutes chest compressions and high-quality CPR are critical to keep oxygen flowing to the brain and organs.
  3. Metabolic Phase (after 10 minutes): After ten minutes without oxygen cell damage becomes severe drastically lowering survival rates even with medical help.

Risk Factors for Cardiac Arrest

Conditions such as high blood pressure diabetes obesity smoking and high cholesterol can increase the risk of SCA. Family history previous heart attacks or congenital heart conditions also add to the risk. Poor lifestyle habits like lack of exercise unhealthy diet and substance abuse can further weaken the heart. Experts recommend regular screenings balanced nutrition physical activity and quitting smoking to reduce these risks.

Understanding the link between back pain and heart problems as well as knowing the three critical phases of cardiac arrest can save lives. Prompt recognition and response are key to protecting heart health.
