Early Signs You Should Never Ignore

One of the most concerning issues is high blood pressure. Nearly one in three adults in India has hypertension, yet many remain undiagnosed. Women are particularly vulnerable, with some cases going untreated until the first symptom becomes a serious medical emergency. The risk rises sharply when diabetes and hypertension occur together, a combination often described as the “twin epidemic.”

Obesity is another rising concern, with one in four Indians classified as overweight. But weight is only part of the problem. Sedentary jobs, binge-watching late at night, irregular eating schedules, and high stress levels all contribute significantly to heart problems. Air pollution has now been officially recognized as a cardiovascular risk, and doctors recommend checking the air quality index before exercising outdoors.

Medical experts also stress the need for early cholesterol testing. For those with a family history of heart disease, an advanced Lp(a) test can reveal hidden genetic risks that standard check-ups may miss. Contrary to public myths, cardiologists emphasize that lifestyle factors—not COVID-19 vaccines—are the primary cause of sudden cardiac arrests. Rural India is also witnessing a surge in heart cases as diets change while healthcare access remains limited. Alarmingly, the use of heart medications has increased by nearly 50% in recent years.

How Families Can Stay Heart-Healthy

The good news is that prevention is possible with consistent habits. Dr Kohli advises families to “know their numbers”—regularly check blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Incorporating even a brisk 20-minute walk daily can make a difference. Preparing more meals at home, reducing salt intake, avoiding smoking, and practicing stress management are simple yet powerful steps toward heart protection.

Learning CPR is another crucial life-saving skill, as cardiac events often occur at home, workplaces, or public spaces. Heart disease doesn’t just affect one person—it impacts entire families. By making small but steady lifestyle changes, families can prevent heart disease from developing silently over the years.
