BAFTA Film Awards 2026: Farhan Akhtar’s Boong Makes History as the Only Indian Nominee

Date:

The nominations for the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards have been officially announced, highlighting a diverse and globally representative slate of films from across the world. This year’s list is led by Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically charged action drama One Battle After Another, which dominates the field with 14 nominations. Close behind is Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending blues-inspired vampire film Sinners, earning 13 nominations and cementing its position as a major awards contender.

India has also secured a significant moment on the international awards stage. Farhan Akhtar’s Manipuri-language coming-of-age film Boong has been nominated in the Best Children and Family Film category, making it the only Indian entry recognised at the BAFTA Film Awards 2026. The nomination marks a major milestone for Indian regional cinema, underlining its growing global visibility and storytelling strength.

Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and produced by Farhan Akhtar alongside Vikesh Bhutani Alan McAlex Ritesh Sidhwani and Shujaat Saudagar, Boong stars Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam. The film tells a tender and culturally rooted story that has resonated strongly with international audiences and critics alike. Its BAFTA recognition reflects the film’s emotional depth and universal appeal, particularly within the children and family genre.

Boong first premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival in the Discovery section and went on to enjoy a successful festival run. Screenings followed at the Warsaw International Film Festival 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 the 55th International Film Festival of India and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025. Each appearance helped build momentum and positioned the film as a standout example of contemporary regional Indian cinema on the world stage.

Beyond the Indian entry, the wider BAFTA race remains highly competitive. Chloé Zhao’s literary adaptation Hamnet and Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme have both secured 11 nominations. The Best Film category features One Battle After Another Hamnet Marty Supreme Sinners and the Norwegian drama Sentimental Value, showcasing a strong mix of Hollywood and international productions.

The Best Leading Actor category includes Robert Aramayo for I Swear Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon Michael B Jordan for Sinners and Jesse Plemons for Bugonia. In the Best Leading Actress race are Jessie Buckley for Hamnet Rose Byrne for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue Chase Infiniti for One Battle After Another Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value and Emma Stone for Bugonia.

Supporting actor and actress nominations further spotlight acclaimed performances including Teyana Taylor Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn for One Battle After Another. The BAFTAs have once again drawn attention to performances that may have been overlooked elsewhere including Paul Mescal in Hamnet and Odessa A’zion in Marty Supreme.

The EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on February 22 2026 in London with actor Alan Cumming set to host the evening. As one of the most closely watched precursors to the Academy Awards on March 15 the BAFTAs often provide a strong indication of how the global awards season may unfold.
